The M113 armoured personnel carriers originated in the 1950s and saw action in the Vietnam War, among other conflicts, utilized by the United States Army. They have also been adopted by several other countries now allied with Ukraine. Consequently, Kyiv has acquired several hundred M113 carriers, making it one of the most numerous Western vehicles in the Ukrainian army.

Ukrainians assessed the M113 armoured personnel carriers

The Ukrainians primarily use the M113s for transporting soldiers and equipment and evacuating the wounded from the battlefield. There's enough space inside for up to 11 people and a crew of two.

Members of the Ukrainian M113 crew highlight its solid off-road capabilities and impressive maximum speed. The vehicle is equipped with a 275 HP engine, which, according to official specifications, allows it to reach speeds of up to approximately 65 km/h. However, one Ukrainian claims to have accelerated these vehicles to about 75 km/h. Another benefit is their amphibious ability to cross bodies of water.

The M113's armour does not provide a high level of protection, which is understandable given the vehicle's age. Ukrainians cite very loud engine noise and frequent breakdowns related to the tracks and engine components as drawbacks.

Nevertheless, the M113s are relatively simple constructs, and some issues can be quickly resolved, provided spare parts are available. Other Ukrainian soldiers have expressed similar views, noting that these American carriers have some features in common with popular grain harvesters. As a result, many Ukrainian mechanics have swiftly learned the inner workings of M113s despite having no previous experience with military equipment.
