On Tuesday, May 7, Nintendo's Shuntaro Furukawa caught console fans off guard. On social media, he revealed that a new model was on the horizon, alongside how long fans would need to wait for it.

Nintendo is a Japanese company founded in 1989, initially making hanafuda playing cards for a game of the same name. Over the years, Nintendo shifted its focus to selling console games, establishing itself as a powerhouse in the industry. Its most celebrated consoles include the Game Boy, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo DS, Wii, and Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch, in particular, stands as one of the company’s most iconic consoles, beloved for its mix of classic and contemporary games. On Tuesday, May 7, Shuntaro Furukawa, the head of Nintendo, surprised gaming enthusiasts by confirming the development of the Nintendo Switch's successor on social media.

Anticipation builds for the successor to the Nintendo Switch

Launched in 2017, the Nintendo Switch console quickly captured the hearts of the company's fans. Its ongoing popularity, demonstrated by sales surpassing 141 million units seven years after its release, speaks volumes. These figures are indeed remarkable.

Yet, the absence of a new Nintendo console over seven years has become noticeable. With competitors unveiling ever-more advanced consoles and games incompatible with the Nintendo Switch, Furukawa recognized the need for innovation.

Exciting times ahead: Nintendo Switch 2 is on the way

"This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation," the Nintendo president announced on social media.

Social media is abuzz with speculation, with fans predicting the newest console's debut in 2025, though nothing has been confirmed. The only option is to stay tuned for the latest updates, which Shuntaro Furukawa is likely to share via social media.
