New York airports on alert as mysterious drones prompt closure
The runways at Stewart International Airport in New York were closed Friday evening, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. The closure was due to mysterious drone activity.
"This has gone too far," emphasized New York Governor Kathy Hochul in a statement on Saturday. "Last night, the runways at Stewart Airfield were shut down for approximately one hour due to drone activity in the airspace," she reported.
New York State Police reported receiving "numerous reports of drone sightings over the past 24 hours." The officers noted that there is "no evidence at this time that any of the reported sightings pose a public safety threat." A similar statement was issued by the FBI, reassuring state residents.
The New York Governor urged Congress to pass a law that would strengthen Federal Aviation Administration oversight of drones.
The number of reports of unexplained drone sightings over American facilities has been increasing since November. Mysterious drones are flying over New Jersey and New York (including the Staten Island shoreline, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and near LaGuardia Airport in Queens).
Despite numerous appeals from politicians, the White House and the Pentagon reassure the public that there is no evidence of foreign involvement in this matter.
