It has been two and a half years since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. During this time, many world leaders, including the prime minister of the United Kingdom and the president of the USA, have visited Kyiv. Now, as officials have announced, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is known for his visits to the Kremlin, will arrive in the capital of the war-torn country.
Although the politician has never supported the actions of the Russian army, many Ukrainians see him as one of Vladimir Putin's regime's allies. While repeatedly calling for a ceasefire, Narendra Modi did not end business dealings with Moscow, taking advantage, among other things, of the lowered oil prices following the aggression.
However, the last straw for many Ukrainian commentators was the recent meeting between the Indian prime minister and Vladimir Putin. During the meeting, both men did not shy away from warm words, culminating in a friendly embrace that infuriated Ukrainians.
Indian prime minister to visit Kyiv, and before that, Warsaw
According to officials from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to appear in Kyiv on Friday, August 23, upon the special invitation of Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Experts note this is one of the more significant moments for such visits. It will occur during a surprising Ukrainian offensive on Russian territory, which will certainly be a topic of discussion between the politicians. Similarly, much time will most likely be devoted to potential peace talks.
Along with the capital of Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning a visit to Poland. It will take place on August 21-22 and will be the first visit of such an important Indian politician to Warsaw in 45 years.
