Fans of Matthew Perry expressed their surprise and outrage that the actor known for his role as Chandler Bing in the TV series "Friends" was omitted from the "In Memoriam" segment during this year's Emmy Awards ceremony. The 76th Emmy Awards occurred on September 15 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. The organizers sought to address these emotions.

Matthew Perry, who passed away in October 2023 at the age of 54 due to a drug overdose, was not mentioned in the segment dedicated to deceased stars such as Bob Newhart, Carl Weathers, Donald Sutherland, and James Earl Jones. Many viewers immediately took to social media to express their outrage and question why the actor was not included in the tribute.

The Emmy organizers quickly addressed the concerns. They assured that Matthew Perry was not forgotten. The actor, who died on October 28, 2023, was honoured during last year's 75th awards ceremony. It is worth noting that due to the writers' strikes, last year's Emmy Awards were moved to January 2024, hence the tribute to Perry took place earlier.

A similar situation occurred in February when BAFTA was forced to issue a statement after fans criticized the omission of the actor in the "In Memoriam" segment during the film awards ceremony. BAFTA explained that Perry would be honoured during the BAFTA TV Awards ceremony in May and on the website in the section dedicated to the deceased.

Not everyone was remembered at the Emmy Awards

Unfortunately, the segment missed two prominent figures – Shelley Duvall and Joe Flaherty. Duvall, although best known for her film roles with directors such as Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick, also had a significant television career. She was twice nominated for an Emmy, and her shows like "Faerie Tale Theatre" and "Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories" were popular. Shelley Duvall passed away in July 2024 at the age of 75. She gained the most popularity for her performance in Kubrick's "The Shining" as the wife of a husband descending into madness, played by Jack Nicholson. Her omission from the Emmy ceremony is another sad episode in her story. Over the last few decades, Duvall had been largely forgotten. The actress, who suffered for years from mental illness, had lost her way and was living in a car filled with trash.

The 2024 Emmy Awards ceremony was hosted by the father and son duo, Eugene and Dan Levy, who are the co-creators and stars of the popular series "Schitt's Creek". The big winners of the evening included the controversial Netflix series "Reniferek", the kitchen drama "The Bear", and the historical series set in Japan "Shogun".
