Rice is one of the most popular ingredients in cuisines around the world. The Japanese say that a meal without rice doesn't exist. It's no wonder – it's nutritious, readily available, and versatile. However, not everyone knows how to properly prepare it so that it always comes out fluffy and delicate. Does rice in your kitchen often turn into a sticky mass instead of a light side dish to your meals? Here are proven methods that will ensure perfect results.

Choosing the right rice – The first step to success

Before starting to cook, it's worthwhile to choose the right type of rice. In stores, you'll find a wide variety, from long and slender basmati grains to round and sticky Japanese rice. Each type has its unique properties and works best in different dishes.

  • Long-grain rice: Ideal for pilafs, salads, and Asian dishes. Its grains remain separate after cooking.
  • Medium-grain rice: A versatile rice suitable for many dishes. Its grains are slightly sticky, making it an excellent match with sauces.
  • Short-grain rice: Very sticky, perfect for sushi and other dishes where the grains should stick together.

Cooking loose rice – For the demanding

Cooking loose rice requires a bit more attention, but the result is definitely worth it. Here's a simple recipe:

  1. Before cooking, rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Use 500 ml (about 2 cups) of water for 250 ml (1 cup) of rice.
  3. Place the rice in a pot, cover it with water, and add salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover the pot, and cook on low heat for about 15 to 20 minutes (cooking time depends on the type of rice).
  4. After cooking, remove the pot from the heat and leave it covered for about 5 minutes. This will make the rice fluffier.

Secrets to perfect rice:

  • Do not stir the rice while cooking: Stirring can cause the grains to break and stick together.
  • Use the right pot: A pot with a thick bottom evenly distributes heat, which prevents burning.
  • Experiment with spices: You can add various spices like turmeric, saffron, or bay leaves to the rice while cooking to give it a more interesting flavour.

Cooking perfect rice isn't difficult if you follow a few simple rules. By choosing the right type of rice, rinsing it thoroughly, and cooking according to the instructions, you'll achieve excellent results every time. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if things don't go as planned the first time.
