If you're a fan of vegetable salad or miss herring, the Lviv salad will definitely appeal to you. It combines apples, onions, celery, and potatoes with herring, pickles, and beets for a completely new character. Every bite is full of flavour, and the ingredients complement rather than compete with each other, creating a cohesive dish.

The salad's main ingredient is herring, which, along with red beets, potatoes, pickles, and apples, creates an extraordinary flavour composition. All of this is enveloped in a creamy sour cream and mustard sauce, giving the dish a unique aroma. The salad looks beautiful in the bowl, and the herring is not off-putting in smell.

Lviv Salad is an exceptional traditional dish originating from Ukrainian cuisine. Thanks to its intense flavour and rich ingredients, it works excellently as a snack for parties or family events. The taste will delight all guests, and many will likely ask for the recipe. Supposedly, it even convinces picky mothers-in-law.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 herring fillets in oil
  • 4-6 large beets
  • 4 potatoes
  • 6-7 pickles
  • 4-6 apples
  • 1 medium-sized onion
  • Celery
  • 1 jar of pickled mushrooms

Sauce:

  • 500 mL of sour cream
  • 1 jar of Russian mustard
  • Sugar, salt, and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Boil potatoes, beets, and celery in their skins until they are soft. A fork should easily pierce them.
  2. Then peel and dice them.
  3. Peel and dice the apples as well. Do the same with the herring.
  4. Chop the mushrooms and onion into smaller pieces.
  5. Transfer all ingredients to a large bowl, drizzle with oil, and let sit overnight so the flavours can meld.
  6. Mix the sour cream well with the mustard, season with salt and sugar, and pour into the salad.
  7. Mix thoroughly so the sauce coats all the ingredients. If necessary, season further with salt, pepper, or sugar.

The delicious Lviv salad is ready to eat. Enjoy!
