The spring and summer seasons are times when we particularly focus on our gardens. Some of us pay attention to fruits and vegetables, while others concentrate on plants and flowers that charm the gardens. If lavender is among your plants, remember that July (or early August) is the time for pruning.
Lavender requires pruning
Lavender demands regular pruning to feel rejuvenated. For this reason, owners of gardens with lavender should prune it throughout the year, particularly in spring and summer. If necessary—if it grows too much, this procedure can also be applied in the fall.
However, the most crucial pruning for lavender takes place in the summer—in July or the beginning of August. During this time, focus primarily on removing fading flowers and leafless stems. This will stimulate blooms and aid in thickening.
How to prune lavender?
Lavender prefers to be pruned into a spherical shape. For the perfect cut, a sharp pruner works best. Otherwise, the cut stems may be jagged and easily damaged. It is ideal to prune the lavender to one-third of its height.
During pruning, first remove old and dry stems. Cut as close to the new buds as possible when shaping the bush but never below the green shoots. If you do, the lavender will not grow back from the old stems.
Remember that lavender is a plant worth having in your garden. Its intense aroma is soothing and reduces stress. Lavender also calms the nerves and helps you fall asleep.
