In an interview with TASS agency, Lukyanov emphasized that future peace negotiations with Ukraine should focus on the "roots of the war" rather than on territories.

He identified the main cause of the conflict as NATO's expansion in Eastern Europe during the 1990s and early 21st century.

According to the ISW, Lukyanov's interview was intended to silence speculation about a possible ceasefire with Ukraine. The head of the Valdai Club, Lukyanov, reflects the views of the Kremlin and is a well-known expert on international affairs.
