Israeli airstrikes target threats in Southern Syria's outskirts
The Israeli army has reported carrying out air raids on military facilities in southern Syria. Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasized that these actions aim to prevent these areas from being taken over by the new Syrian government or terrorist organizations.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in London, reported that Israeli planes carried out four strikes on a military unit command southwest of Damascus and one attack on a military facility in southern Daraa. There are currently no reports of casualties or damages.
The office of Minister Katz announced that the Israeli air force is conducting intensive raids as part of the new "pacification of southern Syria" policy. The statement emphasized that they would not allow southern Syria to become like south Lebanon.
Threat to Israeli citizens
In a statement by the Israeli army, it was noted that the raids targeted, among other things, weapon stockpiles, which posed a threat to Israeli citizens. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel demands that no troops from the new government be stationed in areas south of Damascus.
In December 2024, a coalition of rebels overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime, leading to an escalation in Israeli military actions. The Israeli Air Force regularly attacks military targets in Syria, and the raids intensified during the fighting that led to Assad's overthrow. Since 2011, the territory of Syria has been controlled by various armed groups, and the new government has announced the creation of a single national army.
