Israeli airstrike targets Hezbollah in Beirut amid ongoing conflict
The Israeli military reported an attack on the headquarters of Hezbollah, located in Beirut. Al Jazeera TV reported that the Israeli shelling likely resulted in the deaths of numerous people and the destruction of many buildings. Recordings of the attack have surfaced online.
In Israel's Friday air raid on the southern suburbs of Beirut, several buildings were razed to the ground, and probably dozens of people were killed, reported Al Jazeera TV journalist Ali Hashem. The Hezbollah-owned Al-Manar TV reported that 15 rockets destroyed four buildings.
Numerous recordings have appeared online. Some show the moment of the attack, while others illustrate the aftermath. They show burning rubble, everything covered in dust, and smoke continuously rising over the impact site.
Israeli Defence Forces spokesperson Cmdr. Daniel Hagari previously announced that the military conducted a "precision strike" on Hezbollah's headquarters in the Lebanese capital.
Axios reports that the target of Israel's attack on Beirut was Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The portal refers to sources within the Israeli military.
The Israeli military is checking whether Nasrallah was harmed in the strike, added Axios.
According to Reuters and AFP, Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is alive and "doing well." The agencies refer to sources close to the organization.
Additionally, Reuters reported that the air raid on the southern suburbs of Beirut was the largest attack on the Lebanese capital since the outbreak of the current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The agency also reports that panic broke out at the site of the attack.
Netanyahu at the UN headquarters
The attack occurred shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly session in New York, in which he announced that his country would continue to attack Hezbollah until it achieves its war objectives.
The Times of Israel portal added that after his speech, Netanyahu met with the media but left the press conference early after his press advisor approached him to deliver a message.
