A billion dollars in record time. No film recently has achieved what the creators of "Inside Out 2" did. A powerful river of people flowed to the cinemas.

Last year, Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" joined the "Hollywood Billionaires Club." After the marketing frenzy that took place worldwide with the simultaneous premiere of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," the film starring Margot Robbie grossed $1.4 (CAD 1.9) billion globally. This placed it among the 53 films with history's best box office results. This year, the biggest hit seemed to be the second part of "Dune." But along came a tale about emotions.
"Inside Out 2" outperforms Dune
"Dune: Part Two" premiered at the end of February. It grossed a total of $712 (CAD 973) million in cinemas. Until recently, it was the biggest hit of 2024. I am disappointed that 'Dune 2' remains number one. I hope that soon, there will be titles that achieve financial success and that, sooner or later, the summer box office will become significantly better. We need films that are a cinematic experience and fully utilize the impact of the big screen, said director Denis Villeneuve.
Villeneuve's wish came true. On June 12, "Inside Out 2," directed by Kelsey Mann and featuring voices from Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, and Tony Hale, was released in cinemas worldwide. The film's budget was $200 (CAD 273) million. It achieved remarkable success in cinemas.
No one expected this. In just 19 days, the animation about a girl and her emotions grossed $1.015 (CAD 1.387) billion. In the USA, it earned $469.3 (CAD 641) million, while the rest of the world brought in $545.5 (CAD 745.85) million. It's worth noting that the first part of the story achieved $858.8 million (CAD 1.74 billion) at the box office.
We have witnessed rather sad financial failures and disappointments until now. Films like "Stuntman," "Fantastic Beasts," "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," and "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" did not make as much of an impression on viewers as "Inside Out 2."
Let's add that the highest-grossing film of the decades remains "Avatar" from 2009, which grossed $2.9 (CAD 4) billion. In second place is "Avengers: Endgame" with $2.7 (CAD 3.7) billion. The third spot on the podium is the second part of "Avatar" from 2022, which grossed $2.3 (CAD 3.1) billion in cinemas. On the list of 54 (including the new animation) films that made vast amounts of money are productions such as "Avengers: Infinity War," "Titanic," "Jurassic World," "The Lion King," "Top Gun: Maverick," or "Frozen 2."
