On Sunday, January 12, local services in Wellesley received a report of a dog owner who, along with his pet, fell through the ice-covered Lake Waban. The man was taking his dog for a walk.

The man tried to rescue his dog

- We turned the corner and there was a dock that made its way out into the ice and the dog saw some birds and went for it - said Ed Berger, the dog’s owner, in an interview with NBC Boston.

The victim explained that he asked bystanders to call emergency services and then, using a boat, tried to rescue his pet himself. Unfortunately, his attempt was unsuccessful.

- There’s nothing more horrific than not being able to get to your dog. You love them as if they were family - Berger emphasized.

The victim couldn't return to the shore alone

In the video posted online by the local police, a group of rescuers dressed in specialized gear is seen crawling to the middle of the lake to assist the man and his dog, Tommy.

"Both the man and the dog were too far from the shore and couldn't return," reported the local services.

According to NBC Boston, Ed Berger spent about 10 to 15 minutes in the freezing water, and his eight-year-old cocker spaniel nearly half an hour. The services reported that the man and his pet received the necessary assistance. Both have returned home.
