Fall is the time when spiders are searching for warm and cozy places to winter. Unfortunately, our homes often become an ideal refuge for them. September marks the start of the spider breeding season as they look for a suitable place to lay eggs and survive the colder part of the year.
Contrary to popular belief, spiders are not attracted to light. However, many of the insects they feed on respond to home lighting, which consequently lures spiders near the property. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms that attract these creatures and take appropriate steps to effectively deter them.
"Although spiders themselves are not attracted to light sources, many of the insects they feed on are, which in turn causes spiders to approach outdoor lighting," explained pest control expert John Stewart from the technical team at Pelsis UK in an interview with The Sun.
How to protect yourself from a spider invasion?
One of the most effective ways to reduce the number of spiders in the house is to seal potential entry points. Special attention should be paid to window frames and spaces under doors. Installing seals and weather stripping can significantly hinder spiders from getting inside.
Regular cleaning is another key to success. Vacuuming not only eliminates spiders but also their eggs, which drastically reduces their population. It is worth paying special attention to the corners of rooms and spaces under furniture where spiders like to hide. Additionally, using cleaning agents with a lemon scent can effectively deter these creatures.
Natural ways to deter spiders
There are many natural ways to deter spiders that are both effective and environmentally friendly. One of them is using lemon peel. Simply rub it on windowsills, baseboards, or shelves to create a scent barrier that spiders dislike.
It is also worth considering planting strong-smelling plants such as mint, lemongrass, or eucalyptus in the garden or on windowsills. These natural repellents will not only deter spiders but also freshen the air inside the house. Additionally, limit outdoor lighting at night as it will decrease the number of insects attracted to the light and consequently limit the spider population around your home.
