Travellers to France most often head to the capital. Paris, of course, offers a lot, but is it the only interesting place in the country? The answer is obvious.
Attractions for the active
The country of extinct volcanoes is a paradise for walking enthusiasts. Idyllic villages and charming small towns give this region a magical atmosphere. The region features numerous cycling paths. You can also conquer volcanic peaks using marked hiking trails. One of them is Puy de Dôme, which offers breathtaking views of the Chaine des Puys volcanic chain.
For those who enjoy spending their free time actively, Gorges du Tarn, a picturesque canyon in the Midi-Pyrénées region, will surely be to their liking. This place not only guarantees spectacular views but also the opportunity to engage in mountain climbing and water sports in crystal-clear water.
The best conditions for climbing are in the spring and fall, but one can also visit successfully in the summer. Kayaking trips are also popular in Gorges du Tarn, starting in La Malene.
Another natural gem in France is the Verdon Canyon, the second-largest canyon in Europe. Located in Provence, the massive gorge, with a relatively small river flowing at its bottom, can be admired from many different viewpoints. The place also offers excellent facilities for various activities. Though undoubtedly only a few brave souls will dare to leap, bungee jumping is possible here. Less extreme activities include canoeing, rafting, and cave exploring.
Quaint village and winery atmosphere
Tourists tired after adventures in canyons, mountains, and kayaking trips can rejuvenate in the truly picturesque atmosphere of Colmar. This area, surrounded by vineyards with traditional, colourful houses, canals, flower displays, amazing cuisine, and famous wines, looks charming both during the day and after dark.
Relaxation by the water
Water relaxation fans should get to know the town of Etretat in Normandy, which has inspired many artists, including Claude Monet. This fairy-tale place, between two spectacular rock formations, is famous for its white cliffs and rock arches. It has been dubbed the jewel of the Alabaster Coast—a 60-mile (around 100 kilometres) stretch of impressive high, chalky cliffs.
You can also escape the hustle and bustle and urban atmosphere on the island of Ré. This charming place with white houses with green shutters, beautiful beaches, and ideal spots for relaxation is filled with bike paths. It combines elegance and authenticity, making it an alternative to the beautiful but increasingly crowded French Riviera. One common feature can be found between these mentioned places. Both are famous for being beloved among wealthy individuals.
The island can be accessed by car or bike by crossing a bridge that connects Ré with La Rochelle.
Another exceptional place on the map is the island known for wine, honey, chestnuts, and cured meats. This is Corsica, considered a true masterpiece of nature. It is an excellent place for thrill-seekers, as this location offers the famous GR20 trekking trail, the opportunity to explore underwater depths in the Scandola Nature Reserve, or try canyoning in dozens of canyons with fast-flowing rivers.
On the other hand, those who prefer less active recreation and blissful relaxation have beaches at their disposal. There, soft, golden sand is washed by crystal-clear water. This place can also confidently compete with the famous French Riviera.
Additionally, on the island, you can delight your taste buds. Each region of Corsica has its own cheese, made according to a closely guarded recipe, and chestnuts are added to many traditional dishes. There is no need to worry about deliciousness in the region of Sarlat-la-Canéda. It is famous mainly for the production of truffles and foie gras. Local delicacy markets are also held there.
