Fish have long been considered a valuable source of nutrients, especially healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, not all fish products are equally beneficial for health. One of the most controversial products is fish sticks. Although popular and easy to prepare, they may carry serious health risks, particularly for children. Let's examine their composition and effects on the body.

Fish sticks under scrutiny – What do they hide?

While fish are a valuable source of protein and healthy fats, fish sticks are a completely different story. This popular product often contains only trace amounts of actual fish meat. Instead, manufacturers use cheaper substitutes, such as ground bones, skins, and other fish waste, which are then formed into the characteristic sticks.

And what about the breading? Although crispy and tempting, it's a real calorie bomb and a source of harmful trans fats. Trans fats are generated during deep frying and are closely linked to the development of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, the breading contains large amounts of salt, which contributes to increased blood pressure and kidney strain.

Harmful substances in fish sticks – A health threat

Besides trans fats and excess salt, fish sticks may contain other harmful substances formed during production and thermal processing. This includes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carcinogenic compounds that can damage DNA. PAHs are produced during frying and are also present in cigarette smoke and car exhaust fumes.

Why are fish sticks so unhealthy for children?

  • Low nutritional value: Fish sticks are low in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, which are essential for a child's proper development.
  • High in calories and fat: Regular consumption of fish sticks can lead to obesity and weight issues.
  • Harmful substances: Trans fats, salt, and PAHs in fish sticks can harm a child's body and increase the risk of many diseases.
  • Lack of real meat: Instead of valuable fish protein, children mainly receive processed low-quality products.

How to choose a healthy alternative to fish sticks?

If you want to provide your children with healthy and nutritious meals, skip fish sticks and opt for natural sources of protein, such as:

  • Fresh fish: Trout, salmon, pollock, or cod are excellent sources of protein, healthy fats, and vitamins.
  • Seafood: Shrimp, squid, or octopus are light and rich in nutrients.
  • Legumes: Lentils, beans, or chickpeas are a great alternative to meat and are rich in fibre.

Fish sticks, though they may seem like a convenient and tasty meal, actually pose a serious threat to health, especially for children. The high content of harmful fats, salt, and other chemical substances means that this product should be completely eliminated from our diet. Instead, it's worth focusing on fresh fish, seafood, and legumes, which will provide the body with essential nutrients and support proper development.
