Hezbollah's rocket strike leads to deadly escalation in Golan Heights
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke harshly about Hezbollah's rocket attack on a sports field in the Golan Heights on Saturday. At least 10 people were killed, and around 30 were injured.
Netanyahu commented on the recent events in a conversation with the leader of the Druze community, which became the victim of the Lebanese radicals' strike.
Hezbollah "will pay a heavy price for this attack, one that it has not paid so far," - the Israeli Prime Minister stated. He was still in the US, but after the attack, his visit was shortened by five hours.
The politician was expected to return to Jerusalem by Sunday, where he was to participate in a security cabinet meeting the same day.
Hezbollah attack: many killed and injured
The attack took place in the city of Majdal Shams, located in the disputed Golan Heights. The rocket landed near a field where children were playing. The media reports varying estimates of the dead and injured. At least 10 people have died, and around 30 are injured. The condition of many of those injured is critical so that the death toll may rise.
The Israeli army is investigating why the rocket was not intercepted.
Earlier on Saturday, Israel carried out an attack in Lebanon, which killed four fighters, at least one of whom belonged to Hezbollah. The Israeli army maintains that the shelling aimed to destroy military structures belonging to the terrorist organization. Hezbollah responded with several attacks, including one using Katyusha rockets.
A Hezbollah representative denied to Reuters that the group launched an attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Minister: Hezbollah crossed red lines
Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz reported that he spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the attack. "There is no doubt that Hezbollah crossed all red lines," he informed the media. "We are facing an all-out war," he said.
Members of the Israeli administration in unofficial talks express similar views. "The events in the north will bring about a dramatic turn in fighting in the area," one of Netanyahu's delegation members, who is in Washington, told Channel 12.
