Gaza ceasefire: A new chapter in Israel-Hamas relations
Reuters reported that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement to end the 15-month-long conflict in the Gaza Strip. Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets, celebrating with joy, and Palestinian flags were prominently displayed.
On Wednesday evening, numerous photos and videos from the Gaza Strip appeared online. Many individuals were visibly emotional, some expressing disbelief, while others were shouting in Arabic, "Allahu Akbar" (God is almighty - ed.).
Some Palestinian posts claim, "Hamas won the war against Israel," although the agreement does not indicate a winning side.
The published videos feature many young men and even children celebrating.
Ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip
An individual knowledgeable about the peace talks in Qatar reported that Israel and Hamas have agreed to halt hostilities in the Gaza Strip and to exchange Israeli captives for Palestinian detainees.
CNN confirms this information as well. Hamas has approved the agreement and communicated its response to the mediators, a high-ranking Hamas official, Basem Naim, told the station.
The ceasefire agreement lays the groundwork for peace, which will conclude the conflict that began in October 2023.
The lengthy negotiations have been mediated by Egyptian and Qatari representatives, with support from the United States. Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, participated in the negotiations, collaborating with President Joe Biden's team to advance the agreement, Reuters reports.
Conclusion of Gaza Strip negotiations
Israeli forces invaded the Gaza Strip following a Hamas militant attack on October 7, 2023. This sudden assault resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians. Hamas forces kidnapped over 250 foreign and Israeli hostages.
According to data from Gaza's health ministry, more than 46,000 people were killed due to Israel's strikes on the Gaza Strip. The region itself was left heavily damaged.
President-elect Donald Trump has already commented on the agreement: "I am thrilled American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to be reunited with their families and loved ones," he stated on social media.
