Fico's Moscow journey: Peace rally or diplomatic storm?
“Who will stop me from going to a peace rally?” asked Robert Fico on Slovak television. The Prime Minister of Slovakia announced that in May 2025, he will travel to Moscow to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
Robert Fico stated on Slovak television that he will attend the ceremonies dedicated to the Carpathian-Dukla Offensive by Soviet troops from 1944 this coming Sunday. He aims to "show that he does not forget that freedom came from the East."
Will there be a scandal? Fico's strong declaration on Russia
The Prime Minister of Slovakia also revealed that in May 2025, he intends to travel to Moscow for the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. “Who will stop me from going to a peace rally?” asked Fico.
The Slovak politician's declaration may cause consternation in the European Union. Since February 2022, Russia has been at war in Ukraine, leading to its pariah status on the international stage. However, in recent months, Vladimir Putin has found quiet allies, including Hungary and Slovakia.
In an interview on Slovak television, Fico referred to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The politician revealed that he continuously tells Ukrainians he does not understand why "they keep killing each other with Russians." “We are where we were two years ago. The Russians have gained more territorial advantages. We have hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers. And there is no military solution in sight,” he added.
The head of the Slovak government declared that every war ends through negotiations, and he will do everything to ensure that after peace, his country has normal relations with Russia.
Fico's comments came as Slovakia and Ukraine are preparing for a joint meeting of their governments. During this meeting, the politician is expected to discuss the necessity of maintaining oil and gas transit through Ukrainian territory.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia simultaneously assured that his country fully supports Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Therefore, he expects Kyiv to behave "normally and sensibly" in terms of providing its transit infrastructure.
Fico also touched on the topic of the presidential elections in the U.S. In his opinion, Ukraine would benefit from Donald Trump's victory, as the assumption of the presidency by the Republican candidate would increase the chances of ending the war.
