Extremadura offers digital nomads $22,900 to relocate to Spain
People working remotely and those who love Spain have a unique chance to move to this country and earn money. One of the regions has created an extraordinary offer for digital nomads.
The authorities of the Spanish region of Extremadura are offering remote workers up to $22,900 CAD for relocating to this region.
Extremadura - a fascinating region of Spain
This autonomous community borders Portugal and the Spanish regions of Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, and Andalusia.
It has no access to the sea or ocean, but it boasts a fascinating history and many beautiful towns. Tourists are attracted by nature reserves and wild mountain ranges. The Old Town of Cáceres, Roman monuments in the town of Mérida, and the Guadalupe Monastery are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
At the same time, Extremadura is one of the least developed regions. It has one of the lowest GDP per capita in the country and one of the highest unemployment rates at 17.6%, compared to the national average of 11.9%.
It is one of the most sparsely populated regions of Spain, and moreover, the population is continuously declining. To change this, the authorities of Extremadura have decided to allocate $2,800,000 CAD to assist in the relocation of 200 remote workers.
In addition to financial aid, digital nomads will surely appreciate the low cost of living. Compared to Madrid, in the city of Badajoz, they will pay on average 30% less for meals out, public transport, and utilities.
Who can apply for the grants in Extremadura?
Extremadura is targeting its offer at remote workers who are highly skilled professionals in the technology sector. You must be able to work entirely remotely and commit to living in the region for a minimum of two years.
Women, young people under the age of 30, and those who decide to live in towns with fewer than 5,000 residents qualify for grants of $14,800 CAD. Others will receive $12,100 CAD.
Those in the first category who decide to stay for an additional year after the initial two years will receive a second instalment of $7,100 CAD, and others $5,800 CAD.
The exact date for the start of applications has not been confirmed yet, but the authorities state it will be the day after the program is published in the Official Journal of Extremadura, most likely in mid-September.
Applications will be accepted until all funds are allocated, which will not be shorter than a month but no longer than a year.
