EU's Kallas warns trade war with USA benefits China most

The head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said on Thursday in Brussels that a trade war is disadvantageous for everyone, and "If we have a trade war between the US and the EU, then who is laughing out loud? It is China."

Kallas commented on the emerging threats of the USA imposing 20-percent tariffs on EU products in this way.

"There are no winners in trade wars, that is very clear," Kallas said. The diplomat added that China would laugh the loudest if an EU-USA trade war occurs.

"The EU and USA should stick together," said Kallas, who will attend the EU leaders' meeting. Following Donald Trump's return to the White House, politicians will discuss support for Ukraine and relations with the USA.

Peace in Ukraine?

Regarding support for Ukraine, the head of EU diplomacy said that any pressure to accelerate peace talks with Russia would be bad for Kyiv. She added that the EU must be unanimous on this issue because its movements are being closely watched by global partners.

Kallas emphasized that the EU should not underestimate its strength because recent events in Syria have shown that Russia is not invincible. Moscow supported the regime of Bashar al-Assad, which was overthrown by rebels. However, the Estonian warned that the EU needs unity because countries like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China are consolidating to overthrow the current world order.

In response to journalists' questions regarding Georgia, Kallas admitted that at the last meeting of EU foreign ministers, which took place on Monday in Brussels, they were unable to agree on EU sanctions against the Georgian authorities, among others, for repression of the opposition and peaceful demonstrators. However, the politician added that she intends to discuss with EU leaders what steps the EU should take against the authorities of this country.
