Elon Musk's provocation: Challenging German democracy norms
Elon Musk, by supporting Germany's far-right, has stirred numerous controversies. Additionally, there have been attacks on certain German politicians. His statements raise questions about the limits of free speech in the context of German defamation law.
Elon Musk, the well-known entrepreneur and owner of Tesla, has caused a storm in German politics with his controversial statements. Support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and attacks on German political leaders, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, have sparked outrage.
Musk called Steinmeier an "anti-democratic tyrant" on platform X. He also stated that the politician would undoubtedly lose the election. The billionaire, who has been frequently commenting on German politics recently, emphasizes that only AfD can save the country.

"The social market economy was and is the foundation of the success of the German economic model," writes "Handelsblatt." This economic system is not only the foundation of economic prosperity in Germany but also a pillar supporting social cohesion and, thereby, democracy. Our well-functioning model is currently under pressure from a country that is indeed our ally," comments the newspaper.
"Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" comments: "Calling the President of Germany a 'tyrant' disqualifies itself and is not without a certain irony. Brazen arrogance is, after all, the hallmark of the Musk-Trump political empire, which spares itself the trouble of consulting the constitution," concludes the newspaper.
"Straubinger Tagblatt" doesn't hold back: "Musk is an uncouth boor. German politicians should not let him lead them by the nose. The more they are outraged by his statements, the more he feels provoked," writes "ST."
Politicians in Germany are increasingly taking legal action against insults on social media. An example is the Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck, who decided to take legal steps following offensive comments. Nevertheless, many politicians, including those insulted by Musk, do not report such incidents.
A meeting between Musk and AfD leader Alice Weidel may soon take place, which could further escalate the situation. AfD plans to organize a conversation on the X-Space platform, which may be part of the election campaign.
