Dark energy in Gotham: Colin Farrell's gripping finale in "Penguin"

"Penguin" from Max didn't have a single bad episode. The show surprised us at almost every turn. And the finale? It's rare for a production to cause such a stir at the very end.

"Penguin" brought viewers the story of Oswald Cobblepot, whom we saw in "The Batman" with Robert Pattinson. In the series, whose biggest star was Colin Farrell, we delved into the underground of Gotham to see the formation of the Penguin's empire, which had to fight for influence in the drug trade mainly against the Italian Falcone family. Power over it, in a few plot twists, was taken by Sofia (the fantastic Cristin Milioti). The final episode had to focus on the clash between her and Oswald. But did viewers expect such emotions?

Colin Farrell comments on the "Penguin" finale - warning: spoilers ahead

Colin Farrell shared poignant memories from the set of the final episode of HBO's limited series "Penguin," where the atmosphere was incredibly somber and full of emotion.

During a Q&A session after the "Penguin" finale screening at the Saban Media Center, Farrell described the night of filming the last scene as filled with "dark energy." At a key moment, his character, Oswald Cobblepot, commits a shocking murder. Without spoilers - we won't reveal who loses their life.

Farrell highlighted the depth of this scene saying it was truly the extinguishing of the last shred of innocence. The actor also noted that after a year of working together, a strong bond had formed between the cast and crew, which further intensified the emotions of this scene.

Deirdre O’Connell, who plays Os's mother, Francis Cobblepot, described her experience filming the last scene, where her character, in a vegetative state, cannot experience her son's promise fulfilled. She admitted she didn't have a plan for this scene, but Colin did something unique, what she felt. It gave her chills and brought tears, O’Connell recalled.

Showrunner Lauren LeFranc explained that she wanted to portray Os as a flawed but empathetic character. She said she wanted to explore the man who hides behind the antagonist that Batman fans know from earlier films and comics.

Farrell pointed out that the psychological complexity of the character and his relationship with his mother attracted him to the role. The actor described that it was so human. There was pain in it, but also beauty, he admitted. And it must be said that for the first time, the Penguin is not a character detached from reality, almost from a fantasy or horror film, but a real person who experiences many tragedies. Will Colin Farrell take home all the possible awards for this role? The so-called awards season is starting soon, and we'll find out! The final episode of "Penguin" was released on Monday, November 11th on the Max platform. The creators already promise that the TV Penguin will return.
