Closing the chapter: Guantanamo's final countdown begins
The White House is aiming to close the controversial Guantanamo prison. Eleven prisoners have recently been transported to Oman. Only 15 inmates remain. At its peak, nearly 800 people were held there.
The Pentagon emphasized that "the United States appreciates the support of Oman and other partners in reducing the number of detainees and striving to close Guantanamo."
Three of the remaining 15 prisoners in Guantanamo are eligible for transfer, and another three are up for a periodic review board. The remaining prisoners are accused or convicted of war crimes.
US authorities are working towards systematically reducing the number of inmates and ultimately closing Guantanamo.
End of Guantanamo? the last detainees are leaving the prison
The facility was opened after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and quickly became a symbol of controversy associated with brutal interrogation methods and holding prisoners without trial.
Under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, a total of 697 individuals were released, but the closure of the facility, promised by Obama and Joe Biden, has not yet been realized due to congressional resistance.
