Choosing smarter spices: The health perks of Ceylon cinnamon

Cinnamon, the spice that adds warmth and aroma to our baked goods and drinks, holds a certain mystery. Not all cinnamon is created equal. Although at first glance all cinnamon sticks may seem identical, the differences between various types are significant and have a direct impact on our health.

Cinnamon is one of those spices particularly associated with the winter season and holidays. It’s hard to imagine gingerbread cookies, mulled wine, or tea without its spicy aroma. However, not all cinnamon found on store shelves is equally healthy. When choosing this spice, it's important to pay attention to its origin and type, as some varieties may contain harmful substances like coumarin. Consuming it in excess can negatively affect health, particularly liver function.

How does Ceylon cinnamon differ from Chinese cinnamon?

The most commonly found types of cinnamon in our stores are Ceylon and Chinese. Although both come from the bark of the cinnamon tree, they differ in taste, aroma, and, most importantly, coumarin content – a substance that, in large quantities, can be harmful to the liver.

  • Ceylon cinnamon: It is characterized by a mild, sweet flavour and intense aroma. It is more brittle than its Chinese counterpart and has a distinctive, layered appearance. It contains minimal amounts of coumarin, making it safer for health.
  • Chinese cinnamon: It has a more intense, bitter flavour and less refined aroma. It is harder and more compact than Ceylon cinnamon. Unfortunately, it contains significantly larger amounts of coumarin, which can lead to health problems when consumed in large quantities regularly.

Why is coumarin harmful?

Coumarin is a naturally occurring substance that, in large amounts, can damage the liver. Long-term consumption of products rich in coumarin can lead to serious health issues, such as liver damage, heart disease, or cancers.

How to choose healthy cinnamon?

To enjoy aromatic baked goods and simultaneously take care of your health, consider these factors when choosing cinnamon:

  • Origin: Choose Ceylon cinnamon, typically sourced from Sri Lanka.
  • Appearance: Ceylon cinnamon is more brittle, has a delicate colour, and a layered structure.
  • Taste and aroma: It has a sweet flavour and an intense, pleasant aroma.
  • Price: Though generally more expensive than Chinese cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon's quality and health benefits justify the investment.

Why choose Ceylon cinnamon?

Besides its lower coumarin content, Ceylon cinnamon is rich in many valuable nutrients such as:

  • Fibre: It supports digestive system function and regulates blood sugar levels.
  • Vitamins: Contains B vitamins, essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system.
  • Minerals: It is a source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, which strengthen bones, teeth, and the immune system.
  • Antioxidants: Combats free radicals, delaying the aging processes of the body.

While cinnamon adds a unique taste and aroma to dishes, it's essential to remember not all types are created equal. By choosing Ceylon cinnamon, we invest in our health and enjoy the full aroma and nutritional benefits it offers.
