Briton detained in Thailand after 25 years of illegal stay

A 60-year-old Briton has been detained in Thailand after living illegally for 25 years. He entered the country in 2000 on a 30-day tourist visa and avoided deportation for 9,135 days, making him a record holder in this regard.

The Briton, whose name has not been disclosed, was detained in Chiang Mai province during an operation targeting foreigners who had illegally extended their stays. The man arrived in Thailand in 2000 and has not left the country since his visa was valid for only 30 days.

During questioning, the Briton admitted he had not left Thailand since 2000. His new passport, obtained in 2018, lacked entry and exit stamps or visas.

For years, he avoided deportation

Previously, he avoided deportation by claiming he was obtaining a new visa. His family's money from the UK supported him financially.

For 13 years, he lived in Bangkok with a Thai citizen with whom he had a child. Twelve years ago, they moved to Chiang Mai—police plan to deport the man to the UK. The previous record holder, a Pakistani citizen, extended his stay to 10 years, which is half as long.
