Bomb threat forces emergency landing of U.S. flight in Rome
An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi made an emergency landing in Rome due to a bomb threat. There were 199 people on board.
The American Airlines plane, en route from New York to New Delhi, had to make an emergency landing at Fiumicino Airport in Rome.
The reason was an email message about explosives on board, according to Reuters. The alarm turned out to be false, but the decision to land was necessary for the passengers' safety.
After receiving the warning, the plane was escorted by two Italian Eurofighter jets. The aircraft landed safely, and passengers were evacuated for inspection. Luggage was thoroughly checked by special services.
American Airlines reported that flight 292 underwent detailed inspection by the appropriate authorities. After a few hours, when no threats were detected, the plane was cleared to continue its journey. However, due to the need for the crew to rest, the flight to Delhi was rescheduled for the next day.
A spokesperson for Rome-Fiumicino Airport assured that the airport operated normally despite the incident. Passengers had to disembark for the inspection, but the situation was fully under control.
The police are conducting an investigation to determine the identity of the person who sent the false alarm. The perpetrator will face financial consequences related to the emergency landing and flight delay.
