During heatwaves, when thermometers show record-high temperatures, we should pay special attention to what we drink. Some beverages may prove harmful to our bodies in such extreme conditions. It is, however, essential to remember to stay properly hydrated and to supply our bodies with adequate amounts of fluids. We suggest which beverages are most suitable for consumption on hot days.

What to drink during a heatwave, and what to avoid?

During heatwaves, it is crucial to avoid beverages that can worsen our well-being. Although coffee is an indispensable part of the day for many, its consumption should be limited on hot days. Caffeine acts as a diuretic, leading to the loss of essential electrolytes such as potassium. If we cannot imagine a day without coffee, it is worth choosing its chilled version, such as iced coffee.

Another beverage to avoid is strong black tea. It contains theine, which also acts as a diuretic. Energy drinks, often consumed to boost energy levels, can cause blood pressure fluctuations and dehydration.

Alcohol is the worst choice on hot days. Despite the initial feeling of cooling, alcohol leads to dehydration and can cause dangerous blood pressure fluctuations. These effects are particularly harmful in extreme temperatures, potentially leading to serious health problems.

What to drink during a heatwave to stay hydrated?

When thermometers show high temperatures, the best choice is mineral water. Choose high-mineralization water, which will provide the body with essential electrolytes. If the taste of water alone is not appealing enough, add fresh fruits like lemon, watermelon, strawberries, or blueberries. Such water will be more flavorful and refreshing.

Alternatives to mineral water:

  1. Mint brew: Mint has natural cooling properties that can bring relief on hot days. Preparing a mint brew and chilling it is an excellent way to hydrate and cool the body.
  2. Tomato juice: Tomatoes are rich in potassium, which is essential for maintaining electrolyte balance. Tomato juice is a great option for replenishing electrolytes on hot days.
  3. Tomato gazpacho: This is another tomato-based proposal. Gazpacho is easy to digest, refreshing, and perfectly hydrates the body.
  4. Fruit smoothies: Blended fruits with water or natural yogurt are a tasty and healthy alternative to classic beverages. Watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries are perfect for this role.
  5. Coconut water: Naturally rich in electrolytes, coconut water is an excellent drink for hot weather. It not only hydrates but also supplies essential minerals.
