Alert for tourists: Heightened security at German Christmas markets
Western media are warning people heading to Christmas markets in Germany and Belgium. They may be at risk of terrorist attacks.
The warning for tourists was issued, among others, by the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
All due to increased terrorist attacks in recent years
The reason for these warnings is the numerous attacks that have occurred in the region in recent years. In October 2023, two Swedish citizens were shot in Brussels. A year earlier, during an attack there, a police officer was killed and another was injured.
In 2023, similar tragedies also occurred in Germany. A knife attack in the town of Solingen resulted in three fatalities and several others injured. In 2021, five people were attacked with a knife on a train in Bavaria.
Germany is protecting Christmas markets this year
The German newspaper "Bild" assured readers at the end of November that this year, the Christmas markets in Germany will be under the greatest security measures in history.
Carrying knives is prohibited at all public events in Germany as part of the security package. The markets are also protected with barriers and elements such as concrete blocks or modern bollards.
According to the PAP agency, in Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Dortmund, the three largest markets are protected with "proven anti-terror tools" against truck attacks.
German police warn that Christmas markets might particularly attract perpetrators motivated by religion:
"Christmas events usually represent an ideologically appropriate target for Islamist-motivated perpetrators due to their symbolism of Christian values."
It is worth being cautious while visiting holiday markets
Some of Europe's most famous holiday markets include those organized in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Nuremberg, Cologne, and Munich. Despite the charm of these places, travellers should remember to exercise particular caution.
When heading to a particular place, it is worth following events and information provided by local media. While touring, it's necessary to have a charged phone. It is also wise to avoid routine behaviours and sharing travel plans on social media.
