The British public faces the challenge of meeting the ambitious zero-emission targets set by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Achieving these targets requires replacing traditional gas boilers with heat pumps and transitioning to electric vehicles. The Prime Minister announced at the COP29 climate summit the goal of reducing emissions by 81% by 2035.
Heat pumps and electric cars as the key to success
According to express.co.uk, Pinchbeck from the climate change committee warns that a green energy network alone will not suffice to meet government goals by 2035. Technologies enabling the use of clean energy in homes are essential. Heat pumps and electric vehicles are expected to be the "secret weapons" for the next decade.
Heat pumps were previously recommended as a solution to be implemented in one million homes annually by 2030. Last year, about 61,000 were installed. Conservatives caution that the Labour Party's promises could lead to "sacrifices and difficulties," requiring people to forgo high-carbon footprint products and gasoline and diesel vehicles.
The energy secretary, Claire Coutinho questions these plans, emphasizing that the UK is responsible for just 1% of global emissions.
