Ukrainian drones strike Russian airbases, causing widespread damage

The Ukrainian army continues its attacks on military facilities in Russia. Overnight, explosions were heard in Kalach-on-Don in the Volgograd region. These were likely caused by a Ukrainian drone attack on a nearby airport used by the Russian army.

Witnesses reported about ten loud explosions accompanied by the characteristic sound of flying drones and a fire glow visible in the night sky.

As a result of the attack, a fire broke out near Marinovka, located about 20 kilometres from Kalach-on-Don. There is a military airport in that area, which Russia probably used to conduct attacks on Ukraine. It is about 300 kilometres from the border with the Luhansk region in Ukraine.

The governor of the Volgograd region, Andrey Bocharov, confirmed that hostile drones appeared over the region at night. According to him, most of them were destroyed by anti-missile defence. Despite recordings showing large fires, the remaining drones did not cause significant damage.

There is also no information about casualties at this time.

Russian airbase hit: planes to be scrapped

According to reports, the attack destroyed a MiG-31 (variant K or I) and two IL-76s and damaged about five planes, likely MiG-31Ks.

The previous strike on the Savasleyka airport occurred on August 13; it destroyed a fuel and lubricants depot and damaged a MiG-31K/I aircraft.
