The earthquake occurred north of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea, with a magnitude of 7.6 and an epicentre located approximately 10 kilometres (6 miles) beneath the surface. This information was released by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The United States warning system has issued tsunami alerts for parts of the Caribbean Sea, northern areas of Honduras, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. There is no expectation of a tsunami threat to the U.S. Atlantic Coast or the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Earthquakes of this magnitude can cause substantial damage, particularly in coastal regions. As such, tsunami warnings play a vital role in safeguarding residents in at-risk areas.
