Trump's BRICS blunder: Spain mistakenly added to alliance
Donald Trump has officially begun his presidency in the United States. After his inauguration, the politician signed several urgent decrees. During this task, Trump made a notable error. The new occupant of the White House mistakenly included Spain in the BRICS countries.
Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States on Monday, January 20. In his speech, he focused mainly on the country's domestic policy. He announced plans for the deportation of illegal immigrants, tightening border controls, increasing oil and gas extraction, moving away from the Green New Deal, and recognizing only two genders.
Trump then proceeded to the Oval Office, where he signed a series of documents. Among them was the declaration of a state of emergency at the southern border of the United States and the suspension of accepting refugees and asylum seekers.
Trump's notable error: What he said about Spain
Donald Trump has just started his presidency, and he has already made a significant mistake. A recording online shows a brief exchange with one of his collaborators, where Trump mistakenly asserts that Spain belongs to BRICS. "They are BRICS nation. Do you know what a BRICS nation is? You will figure it out," said President Trump.
BRICS is a group of economically cooperating countries. Its founders include Russia, China, Brazil, and India. In 2011, South Africa joined them. BRICS aims to construct a new economic system to compete with Western countries. Some of its proposals include creating a new currency alternative to the dollar. The community also advocates for UN reform. This bloc aims to engage countries from the so-called global south, which includes developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.
In recent years, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates have joined BRICS. Argentina was also expected to join but ultimately did not. On January 1, 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan became partner countries of BRICS. Spain is not a member of this union, and there is no indication that it will be in the foreseeable future.
