Tragic end to Valencia flood search: Two young brothers found
Wednesday's reports from Torrent in the Valencia province brought tragic news — rescuers found the bodies of two boys who disappeared on October 29. Izan Matías, aged 5, and Rubén Matías, aged 3, were swept away from their father, Victor Matías, by the flood. The search effort, which included rescuers, neighbours, volunteers, and divers, had been underway for several days.

On the day of the flood, the children were spending time with their father at home in the Curra neighbourhood when the water suddenly invaded their apartment, catching the entire family by surprise.
The boys' father, Victor Matías, was also swept away by the violent current, but he managed to grab hold of a tree, ultimately saving his life.
Search concluded: boys' bodies found
After several days of intensive searching, the bodies of Rubén and Izan were found, although in different locations, a few kilometres from Torrent. Significant forces were involved in the search, focusing primarily on the Pollo River, about 4 miles from the children's family home.
The boys' family, who arrived for the formal identification of the bodies, is devastated by the tragedy, and the Torrent authorities have provided them with psychological support.

Social support and solidarity
The story of Rubén and Izan shocked the residents of Valencia, as well as all of Spain. Support poured in from many people, emphasized the boys' uncle, Iván.
I am enormously grateful for all the support we have received — he said in an interview with the BBC.
The boys' aunt, Barbara Sastre, confirmed that the search was over, and for the family, this closes a dramatic chapter, though a huge void remains.
It remains dangerous in Spain: Fear of sudden floods
Since October 29, 2023, many regions of Spain have experienced heavy rains and sudden floods. The Valencia region, the eastern part of the Castilla-La Mancha region, and Andalusia have been particularly hard-hit.
Despite the passage of time, Spaniards still fear sudden floods. With weather forecasts predicting heavy rainfall, thousands of people have been evacuated in Malaga. There are also disruptions to flights.
