Witnesses observed the accident when the avalanche, descending from the mountain, swept away people on the slope. The Alpine rescue team was immediately called to the scene.

The area of the Lepontine Alps where the accident occurred is characterized by a third-degree avalanche threat, which indicates a high risk of winter avalanches.

The ANSA agency, citing mountain rescuers, reported challenging weather conditions in the region, which could have contributed to the tragedy. Authorities are appealing for caution and advising the public to avoid dangerous areas in the mountains.
