For many Canadians, tomatoes are a favourite vegetable and a staple in the kitchen. We consume them all year round. They are perfect for sandwiches, salads, and even as a base for tomato soup, purée, or pasta sauce. However, let's not forget about tomato juice, which undoubtedly ranks among the healthiest drinks in the world.
Naturally, it all depends on whether the juice is free of salt and various flavours, aromas, colours, or durability enhancers. In pure tomato juice, you’ll find plenty of good things: vitamins A, C, K, B-group vitamins, beta-carotene, and elements such as potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and fibre. There are plenty of vitamins and beneficial elements here.
Tomato juice significantly improves the condition of our bodies
Thanks to these ingredients, tomato juice boosts immunity against viral and bacterial infections, protects vision from macular degeneration and cataracts, supports the skeletal system, enhances digestion, and helps eliminate toxins from the body. However, these are not the only benefits of consuming the juice.
Tomato juice also noticeably lowers blood pressure and supports proper kidney function. Additionally, in combination with sodium, it can appropriately regulate the hydration of body cells.
Moreover, tomato juice is low in calories and supports fat burning, making it ideal for those struggling with overweight and obesity. Regular consumption is therefore highly recommended.
It should also be added that tomato juice contains a high lycopene content, especially after heat treatment. This compound is also found in other tomato products. It's a powerful antioxidant responsible for tomatoes' red colour. It protects against the harmful effects of free radicals and prevents the development of cancer cells. Furthermore, lycopene slows down aging processes and prevents inflammation of blood vessels. This, however, is just part of the health benefits of this beverage.
Studies confirm - tomato juice is a treasure trove of health
The latest research from Japanese scientists shows that regularly drinking tomato juice helps regulate blood pressure and reduces the risk of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. Therefore, tomato juice prevents severe, even fatal, diseases.
Experts from Tokyo Medical and Dental University analyzed health data from 481 residents of Kuriyama in Hokkaido. During a one-year study, participants had unlimited access to tomato juice. After the study's completion, 94 people with hypertension noticed a significant improvement in blood flow. Meanwhile, 125 patients with dyslipidemia recorded a decrease in bad LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. It is, therefore, important to consume tomato juice in the long term.
