Tibetan golden milk: Your kitchen's secret cold remedy

Fall and winter are times when sniffles, runny noses, and sneezing are heard almost everywhere you go. A cold can really sap your energy, so it's worth ensuring it doesn't spread at home. You can also help yourself from the kitchen.

In kitchen cabinets, you can find many valuable spices that are useful not just for baking cookies, gingerbread cookies, or cakes. When combined with milk, they transform into not only a healthy but also a very tasty drink with a delicate hint of spice. Tibetan milk, also known as golden milk or cocoa for adults, is the best ally for cold days.

Tibetan milk - a home remedy for colds

The most important ingredient is turmeric, which gives the drink its characteristic golden colour. Besides turmeric, golden milk often includes ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, and black pepper.

Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It helps strengthen the immune system, protecting the body from infections. Golden milk can alleviate inflammation in the body, which is particularly beneficial for joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Curcumin can have a positive effect on brain function, improving memory and concentration. To help the body better absorb curcumin, it's worth adding a bit of fat to the golden milk, such as coconut oil.

Additionally, Tibetan golden milk can help combat stomach ailments, such as bloating or indigestion. It's excellent for warming up on cold days, helping the body fight off colds.

Recipe for a warming spiced drink

Golden milk has a warm, slightly spicy flavour with a hint of sweetness, which can be adjusted to your preferences. You can also add a bit of cocoa to enhance the drink's taste.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of milk or plant-based drink
  • a pinch of black pepper,
  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil,
  • a pinch of ginger,
  • 1/3 teaspoon of cinnamon,
  • 2 teaspoons of turmeric,
  • high-quality honey.

Instructions:

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan.
  2. Add all the spices and cook on low heat for 8 minutes.
  3. Add honey to taste at the end.

If you want to preserve the nutritional properties of the honey, remember to add it to a cooled drink. The best time to add it is when the milk is no more than 40 degrees Celsius. If you prefer to drink hot beverages, that's perfectly fine, but keep in mind that the honey will lose its properties.
