Thaad missile system enhances Israel's regional defence
During a visit to Kyiv, Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin confirmed that the US military's advanced THAAD missile defence system has already arrived in Israel and is "ready" for use. In some respects, this weapon outperforms the highly respected Patriot system worldwide.
The United States Secretary of Defense has not yet confirmed whether Israel has deployed the THAAD system. However, he emphasized that Americans are capable of activating it quickly. This is the first time the THAAD system has been stationed in Israel for combat use, as it was previously sent only for exercises.
THAAD system already in Israel
Austin cautiously expressed his opinion on the anticipated Israeli attack on Iran. He stated that it's difficult to determine exactly how this Israeli attack will unfold, adding that Israel will make the final decisions. Austin also emphasized that Americans will do everything in their power to reduce tensions in the Middle East and expressed hope that both sides will initiate a de-escalation process, allowing further developments to be observed.
A system better than the Patriot?
According to earlier information from the Pentagon, THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) aims to strengthen Israeli defence after missile attacks from Iran, which occurred in April and October. Israel was targeted with, among others, ballistic missiles. Approximately 100 American soldiers will operate the THAAD system, deployed to Israel specifically for this purpose.
The THAAD system was developed to intercept short- and medium-range ballistic targets. It has greater interception capabilities than the Patriot system but is seen as a complement to it.
The THAAD system can destroy targets at distances of 145-195 kilometres and at altitudes of up to 145 kilometres. The built-in radar allows for searching, tracking, and identifying objects within a range of up to 1,000 kilometres.
