Stellantis stumbles: Italian car production hits 68‑year low
The past year was challenging for the automotive industry, and among the biggest losers in Europe, the Stellantis group stands out clearly. It was especially tough in Italy, where the industry faced a significant downturn.
Factory stoppages, thousands of unsold cars, and disappointed employees – that's how last year in the Italian automotive sector can be summed up. The production of cars, being one of the key pillars of the local economy, fell by 37% compared to 2023.
According to data published by FIM-CISL trade unions, the Stellantis group produced only 475,090 cars in Italy. Passenger car production hasn't been this low since 1956.
The declines affected the renowned Mirafiori factory in Turin, which in 2024 released 70% fewer cars than the previous year. It was even worse in Modena, where Maserati plants recorded a 79% drop. Both factories struggled with cyclical and compulsory stoppages due to a lack of demand.
The Italian auto industry is still holding on thanks to commercial vehicles, although their production also fell by 17% compared to 2023. Italy can only hope to achieve the annual output of around one million units once promised a year and a half ago by the Italian government and Stellantis authorities. In 2024, the company failed to reach even half of that goal. There is hope that the coming months will be somewhat better.
