Some people think it's an exotic invention from abroad. In reality, it also grows wild in Canada and is called the healthiest plant in the forest. The small, inconspicuous fruits work wonders on our bodies. Before the season ends, it's worth stocking up.

Sea buckthorn is a plant that many people undervalue. It most often grows as a shrub or small tree. The most valuable treasure it holds is the small orange fruits. Thanks to its health-promoting properties, it has earned the nickname "Siberian gold". If you come across the shrubs or find an opportunity to buy the fruits, do not hesitate for a moment longer.

Is sea buckthorn healthy?

Did you know that the fruits of this modest shrub growing on dunes and cliffs hide the true power of nature within? Sea buckthorn, as it is called, is a natural vitamin bomb cherished for centuries by the Siberian people and used in natural medicine.

Sea buckthorn is one of the richest sources of vitamin C, containing up to 10 times more than oranges. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the most important antioxidants that protect our cells from oxidative stress. In addition, sea buckthorn is rich in vitamins A, E, K, and B-group vitamins, carotenoids, flavonoids and many valuable minerals.

The abundance of phytosterols and antioxidants makes sea buckthorn a protector of our hearts, creating a natural shield against cardiovascular diseases. Regularly consuming this fruit can help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, and improve overall cardiovascular health. Phytosterols in sea buckthorn inhibit cholesterol absorption in the intestines, and antioxidants protect blood vessels from damage.

How to use sea buckthorn fruits?

According to regulations, we can freely pick sea buckthorn fruits, but only in places that are not protected, such as dunes and cliffs. It is essential to avoid damaging the shrubs while picking.

Sea buckthorn fruits usually ripen towards the end of August and in September. It's the perfect time to go picking.

Ingredients:

  • 2.2 lbs of sea buckthorn fruits,
  • 3 cups of water,
  • 14 oz of sugar (or to taste).

Preparation method:

  1. Thoroughly wash and dry the sea buckthorn fruits.
  2. Place the fruits in a large pot and add water. Bring to a boil, and cook on medium heat for about 15-20 minutes until the fruits are soft.
  3. Strain the juice into another container using a sieve or cheesecloth. Alternatively, you can use a potato masher or a spoon to extract as much juice as possible from the fruit pulp.
  4. Add sugar to the strained juice and stir until it dissolves. If you prefer less sweet juice, you can adjust the amount of sugar to your taste.
  5. Pour the juice into sterilized bottles or jars. Seal tightly and pasteurize in boiling water for about 10-15 minutes.

Store the juice in a dark, cool place. Once opened, keep the bottle in the fridge and consume it within a few days.
