Russia lost another aircraft in the Donetsk region, which had been shelling territory controlled by Ukraine. It crashed after being shot down by its own forces, reports Ukrainska Pravda, citing a source in the Ukrainian Air Force.

The incident occurred near Kostiantynivka in the Donbas region.

Traces of destruction

Photos shared on social media platforms show the wreckage of an aircraft that, after being shot down, hit a house, causing a fire. One video shows two Russian fighter jets flying in the same direction, with one suddenly shooting down the other.

What is Russia's next target?

The latest intelligence update stated that on October 1, Russia took control of Vuhledar in the southern part of the Donetsk region. Vuhledar is located at the intersection of two key fronts, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk. The capture of the town followed a renewed campaign by Russia in September. By the end of the month, Russian forces had nearly encircled the town, leading to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces.

For the past two years, Russia had made sporadic attempts to capture Vuhledar, suffering heavy losses. The town's location on elevated terrain made it easier for Ukrainian forces to defend.

In the coming weeks, it is assessed that Russian forces are likely to attempt further advances beyond Vuhledar. To the west, a likely target is the locality of Velyka Novosilka, which is situated along the main road T0509. Just 8 kilometres to the north is the locality of Bohoyavlenka.
