Russia accused of using Mariupol residents as 'human shield'

Petro Andriuszczenko reported that Russian soldiers have organized a hidden weapons stash deep within a residential complex in Mariupol. This is yet another instance of the Russian army employing the "human shield" tactic.

The war in Ukraine has now dragged on for over two and a half years. Since it began, we've seen shifts in initiative from both sides. Currently, many actions are limited to small sections along the front line.

Meanwhile, intensive preparations are ongoing for potential offensives or effective defences. According to Ukrainian media, southern regions of Ukraine, which the Russians occupied early in the conflict, are particularly crucial for Russia in this regard.

This is unsurprising, given that the so-called "land corridor" to Crimea was one of Russia’s significant accomplishments in this conflict. The longest and bloodiest battles, symbolized by the thoroughly destroyed Mariupol, occurred there. Now, nearly two years later, Russia is trying to rebuild the city without forgetting its strategic importance.

Consequently, amid the rebuilding blocks, the Russian army is creating ammunition stockpiles and essential war infrastructure. The surrounding houses and their residents effectively become a "human shield".

Russians established another weapon depot in the middle of a residential block on Torhova Street. Another war crime and further proof of their standard "human shield" tactic. It makes an air raid impossible but does not negate the obligation to take action – noted Petro Andriuszczenko, former advisor to the mayor of Mariupol.
