Risk of wider Middle East war "extremely high," says Kremlin

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov spoke after the death of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah. He stated that the risk of a wider war in the Middle East is now "extremely high."

The Hezbollah leader was killed on Friday in an Israeli airstrike. He was likely killed by a shockwave, as no direct wounds were found on his body, reported Reuters.

Last week, Israel, which has been bombing targets in Lebanon for weeks, intensified its actions. Several hundred people were killed. Since last Monday, one million Lebanese have left their homes, fleeing from the war.

On Monday, Dmitry Peskov spoke about the recent events in Lebanon, including the death of the Hezbollah leader. The Kremlin spokesperson discussed the "extremely high" threat of a larger conflict. "The Russian side condemns such actions, we believe that they have led to a significant destabilisation of the situation in the region," said Peskov, as quoted by interfax.ru.

Further, Peskov said that "such indiscriminate bombing of residential areas in Lebanon leads to a huge number of human casualties, which will inevitably bring on a humanitarian catastrophe like the one we are seeing in Gaza".

At the same time, Peskov did not say a word about the thousands of casualties in Ukraine. As a result of the war started by Russia, tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have lost their lives.
