Rescue app for Jersey locals: Pinpointing emergencies
Firefighters from Jersey are encouraging residents to download a rescue application that enables precise location determination in emergency situations. Thanks to the grid system, areas are divided into squares measuring approximately 3 metres by 3 metres, each with a unique address.
Firefighters from Jersey (a British Crown Dependency) are appealing to residents to install the What3Words app on their phones. According to the BBC News portal, this app allows for precise location determination when needed. With the grid system, areas are divided into squares measuring about 3 metres by 3 metres, each having a unique address consisting of three words.
The app will help locate those in need
A fire department representative explains that when reporting an emergency, one of the first questions is "Where is the emergency?". Describing the exact location can be challenging, so the W3W app makes it easier to provide a precise location to rescue services. For example, the fire station headquarters in the app is marked as "returns.managed.defender".
Shorter winter days and adverse weather conditions, such as rain or fog, increase the risk of accidents. Firefighters emphasize that emergencies can occur anywhere, from Five Mile Road to the cliffs on the northern coast. Relying on descriptions based on landmarks can delay response times in life-threatening situations.
