Proposal for a Trump third term reignites Constitutional debate
Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to allow President Donald Trump a third term. The information was reported by CNBC.
Republican Congressman Andy Ogles from Tennessee issued a proposal on Thursday aimed at amending the U.S. Constitution to allow President Donald Trump, as well as future presidents, a third term. Ogles argues that "he has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness."
Ogles emphasizes that it is necessary to provide Trump with all the resources to repair the situation after the Biden administration. "He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him," Ogles stated. The proposed constitutional amendment pertains to the restrictions imposed by the 22nd Amendment, which currently allows for two terms.
Controversy surrounding the proposal
Ogles' resolution was introduced three days after Trump was sworn in for his second, and according to current law, last term. Previously, Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman introduced a resolution affirming that the 22nd Amendment limits the presidency to two terms. The amendment was introduced in 1947 and ratified in 1951 to prevent a situation like the one created by Franklin Roosevelt, who was elected to four terms. Ogles wants to change the provision so that a president can be elected three times.
Philip Klinkner from Hamilton College suggests that Trump could become vice president and then assume the presidency if the president resigns. Another scenario involves a Trump family member running as a figurehead while Trump makes key decisions.
