"Two people familiar with the matter" shared with Reuters that this much-anticipated launch is slated for the day before Google's annual I/O conference kicks off. This event, happening on Tuesday, May 14th, is expected to showcase new AI models, including Gemini and Gemma. According to reports from Bloomberg and The Information, OpenAI's search engine will feature integration with the ChatGPT chatbot, a citation function, and a partnership with Bing.

Google braces for competition

In anticipation of the new contender, Google is gearing up to protect its leading stance. Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Google's search division, has advised his team of the challenging times ahead. Despite introducing innovations, he emphasized that people's trust in Google as a reliable information source is vital in today's AI-driven age. The Verge reports that OpenAI is trying to persuade Google staff to defect to their search engine project, highlighting the escalating tech market rivalry.

Intensifying battles in the AI arena

However, OpenAI isn't the only entity aiming to disrupt the search engine domain. Perplexity, a startup launched by an ex-OpenAI researcher, boasted ten million active users in January alone, underscoring the rising appeal of its AI-driven search tool.
As Google contends with a continuing antitrust lawsuit with the Department of Justice over its market dominance, successes from OpenAI could prove to be a significant hurdle, particularly on the eve of their own I/O showcase. Yet, as competition heats up, it's the users who may stand to gain the most.
