Onions as natural pest repellents: Keep rodents at bay
Onions from our pantries have uses beyond the kitchen. One simple trick with this vegetable can help repel certain unwanted guests.
Although onions are an ingredient in many dishes, they are useful outside the kitchen as well. Why place onions near the door? This trick is particularly beneficial for those living in houses or on ground floors. It turns out that the smell of this vegetable is an effective deterrent against certain rodents.
Mice in the area? Act immediately
Although they may seem harmless, mice can cause significant damage. These uninvited guests can chew through wires or raid the pantry, leaving a mess. How can you remove them from your home? Onion might help...
Mice have a sensitive sense of smell and dislike strong odours. One scent that irritates them is onion. Therefore, the vegetable acts as a natural repellent for these unwanted occupants. How do you use onions to get rid of mice? Simply prepare an easy mixture to spray on areas where mice might enter your home.
Start by cutting off the ends of a large onion, then halve the vegetable and remove the peels. Grate it using a coarse grater. Transfer it to a larger container and add about 500 millilitres of water. Add half a teaspoon of fresh black pepper. Add an additional 200 millilitres of vinegar and mix everything thoroughly. Let the mixture sit for a few hours to allow the ingredients to blend. After the designated time, strain the liquid from the onion remnants and pour it through gauze into a spray bottle. Spray the liquid in areas where mice might enter your home.
By preparing this homemade repellent, you not only save money but also avoid less humane methods, such as using a mouse trap.
