Netherlands to tighten borders from December 9: Crackdown on migration
Dutch authorities have officially confirmed that starting December 9, border controls will be introduced at the country's borders. This decision aims to prevent "irregular migration and human trafficking."
The number of countries that have introduced border controls is increasing. So far, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Poland have decided to restrict free border movement. Germany and France have also implemented significant border restrictions.
Beginning December 9, the Netherlands will join the aforementioned countries. The Ministry of Migration has already confirmed unofficial media reports. The government in The Hague has decided to implement these measures for the next six months.
It is time to tackle irregular migration and migrant smuggling in a concrete way. The border controls will be carried out in such a way that economic and commuting traffic in the border regions will be hindered as little as possible, said the head of the Ministry of Migration, Marjolein Faber.
What will the restrictions at the Dutch borders look like?
The Dutch government indicates that the restriction of border movement will be selective in nature. For now, border guards will appear where the risk of illegal migration is higher. Officers will focus on specific areas and threats.
Even now in the Netherlands, borders are protected by the local Marechaussee (Royal Armed Forces). These actions are currently significantly limited and targeted. The current initiative of the government in The Hague aligns with EU policy on combating terrorism and illegal migration.
