It's safe to say each of us has experienced a stuffy nose at least once in our lives. It most often occurs due to a cold or viral infection. However, a stuffy nose can also result from allergies, which trigger our immune system. When the body detects an intruder, like a virus, it responds by increasing blood flow to the nose. Although this is a defence mechanism, it leads to problems with breathing through the nose and a troublesome runny nose.

In winter, when the air is dry and infection season is ongoing, this symptom becomes particularly bothersome, especially when accompanied by headaches and general fatigue. Before reaching for pharmaceutical solutions, it's worth considering home methods that can help alleviate these symptoms naturally and safely.

Home remedies for a stuffy nose

Steam inhalation is one of the oldest and most effective home remedies for a stuffy nose. Herbs such as mint or eucalyptus, which release medicinal vapours when added to hot water, can be helpful. Such a "steam treatment" can work wonders. During inhalation, covering your head with a towel is beneficial so the steam doesn't escape and can penetrate deeply into the respiratory tract. A saline solution can also be used for inhalation.

Another noteworthy method is nose massage using Dr. Alan Mandell's technique. It involves gently pressing the sides of the nose and pulling the skin towards the ears. Although the method may seem simple and somewhat unconventional, many people confirm its effectiveness, especially when quick relief is needed.

In the battle against a stuffy nose, it's also worth trying natural herbal infusions. One of the most effective is peppermint tea. This plant has been known for centuries for its properties that support the respiratory system. Preparation is simple: pour hot water over a handful of dried or fresh mint leaves and then inhale the rising aromatic scent. Mint helps with expectoration and loosens nasal congestion, bringing almost immediate relief.

Another home remedy is onion therapy. Although it may seem unusual, onions have purifying properties for the nose. Slice one and place it next to the bed. Its intense aroma, wafting through the air, acts as a natural air freshener and can clear a stuffy nose during sleep.

We should also not forget about proper hydration of the body. Drinking an adequate amount of fluids, such as herbal teas with lemon and honey, helps the body fight infection. Hydration is important because it dilutes nasal secretions, making them easier to remove and preventing buildup.

When dealing with a stuffy nose, it’s worth paying attention to the humidity of the air at home. Dry air exacerbates symptoms, so it's crucial to moisturize the space, especially during winter regularly. This can be done using special air humidifiers or a simple trick—placing a water bowl next to a heater.

What to remember when treating a runny nose?

While home remedies can be effective, they should not be used without limits. It's always important to observe how the body responds to treatment. If a stuffy nose persists for an extended period, it may be necessary to consult a doctor. A long-lasting symptom may indicate a more serious illness, not just a seasonal cold.
