Floods and landslides have paralyzed road traffic and life in many towns in Nepal. Kathmandu, the country's capital, is one of the places most affected by the disaster. Heavy rains have flooded a significant portion of the city's southern districts.
Everyone to the rescue
Catastrophic monsoon rains in Nepal have caused floods and landslides, increasing casualties. Local media report that 193 people have died. Nepalese police and other rescue services are tirelessly fighting against the disaster and its aftermath.
Nepalese police reported rescue operations are ongoing. Over 3,000 people have been deployed to the efforts using helicopters, boats, and rafts. Officials emphasize that the worst situation is in the capital. At least three buses en route to Kathmandu were caught in traffic and buried by landslides.
Nepalese police emphasize that the weather slightly improved on Sunday (September 29, 11:00 PM EDT), allowing the start of rescue operations and clearing the effects of the disaster. Despite this, Kathmandu remains cut off from the rest of the country because mudslides block all roads leading to the city.
The most difficult situation in years
The government of Nepal has announced that schools and universities will be closed for the next three days (October 1-3). The monsoon season in Nepal typically lasts from June to mid-September. Meteorologists, however, point out that the rains affecting Nepal's residents are the heaviest since 1970.
